According to the writings in The Lesser Key of Solomon, Sytry is the twelfth spirit listed in the Goetia. He is a Great Prince of Hell with sixty legions of demons under his command.
He is depicted as a humanoid with the head of a leopard and the wings of a griffin, but at the request of the conjurer can take the form of a very handsome man. He can force men and women to love one another and make them appear naked if the conjurer desires.
He can also reveal the secrets of women, often mocking them.
Sitri in the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum
The Pseudomonarchia daemonum, or False Monarchy of Demons, by the Dutch occultist Johann Weyer, was published as an appendix to his book titled De praestigiis daemonum, or On the Tricks of Demons, in 1577. The description of Sitri from the Pseudomonarchia daemonum is as follows:
| “ | Sitri [*Sytry], alias Bitru, is a great prince, appeering with the face of a leopard, and having wings as a griffen: when he taketh humane shape, he is verie beautiful, he inflameth a man with a womans love, and also stirreth up women to love men, being commanded he willinglie deteineth [discloses] secrets of women, laughing at them and mocking them, to make them luxuriouslie naked, and there obeie him sixtie legions.[1] | ” |
Sitri in the Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis (Ars Goetia)
The Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis or Lesser Key of Solomon is an anonymously written book of demonology that is believed to have been complied sometime during the 17th century CE. The work is divided into five books, the first of which, known as the Ars Goetia, lists 72 demons. The Ars Goetia is heavily based off of Johann Weyer's Pseudomonarchia daemonum.
In 1904, the British occultist and founder of the religion of Thelema, Aleister Crowley, published a version of the Lesser Key of Solomon which was translated by another British occultist, Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, and contained additional invocations added by Crowley. The Ars Goetia's passage on Sitri from the 1904 version is as follows:
| “ | SITRI. - The Twelfth Spirit is Sitri. He is a Great Prince and appeareth at first with a Leopard’s head and the Wings of a Gryphon, but after the command of the Master of the Exorcism he putteth on Human shape, and that very beautiful. He enflameth men with Women’s love, and Women with Men’s love; and causeth them also to show themselves naked if it be desired. He governeth 60 Legions of Spirits. His Seal is this, to be worn as a Lamen before thee, etc.[2] | ” |
Sitri in the Dictionnaire Infernal
The Infernal Dictionary is a book of demonology written in 1818 by the French occultist Jacques Auguste Simon Collin de Plancy. The entry for Sitri is as follows:
| “ | Bitru, demon. See Sytry.[3] | ” |
| “ | Sytry or Bitru, great prince of the underworld; he appears in the form of a leopard, with griffin wings. But when he takes human form, he is of great beauty. It is he who inflames passions. He discovers, when commanded, the secrets of women, whom he willingly ridicules. Seventy legions obey him.[4] | ” |
